Frequently asked questions

What ages is 87 Sound Academy for?

Our programs are designed for students ages 12–19. Courses are structured to support middle and high school learners at different experience levels.

Do students need prior music experience?

No. Creative and Technical Level 1 courses are beginner-friendly and assume no prior experience. Higher levels build progressively on earlier concepts.

What’s the difference between Creative and Technical pathways?

  • Creative courses focus on musical ideas, composition, sound design, and artistic development.

  • Technical courses focus on audio fundamentals, mixing, signal flow, and production precision.

Students may take one pathway or combine both.

Can students take Creative and Technical courses at the same time?

Yes. Many students benefit from taking creative and technical courses simultaneously, depending on interest and readiness.

Are the courses self-paced or live?

Both options are available:

  • Self-Paced: Pre-recorded lessons students complete on their own schedule

  • Live: Includes weekly instructor-led classes, feedback, and discussion

The curriculum and learning outcomes are the same.

How long are the courses?

Most courses run 8–12 weeks in length.
Self-paced courses include extended access so students can move comfortably through the material.

What equipment or software is required?

Students need:

  • A computer with internet access

  • A Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) of their choice

  • Headphones or speakers

  • A MIDI Keyboard

  • An Audio Interface (Optional)

  • A Studio Microphone (Optional)

No specific plugins or gear are required for Level 1 courses.

Are payment plans available?

Yes. We offer payment plans to support families.

All payment options include full access to the course.

Do you accept ESA (Education Savings Account) funds?

While direct ESA checkout is not currently available on our website, many families successfully use ESA funds through reimbursement or third-party approval.

We provide:

  • Itemized invoices

  • Course syllabi

  • Instructor credentials

  • Learning objectives

87 Sound Academy is approved to accept ESA funds through Outschool.

Are these courses accredited?

Our programs are not accredited but are commonly used for:

  • Homeschool enrichment

  • Electives

  • Arts education credit

  • Skill-based learning

Families should check local requirements if formal credit documentation is needed.

Will students receive feedback on their work?

Yes.

  • Live courses include real-time feedback and discussion

  • Self-paced courses include structured checkpoints and project-based learning

All courses conclude with a capstone project.

Who teaches the courses?

Courses are taught by experienced music professionals actively working in studio and live performance environments, including major tours and professional projects.

Can a student move up levels later?

Yes. Students may enroll in higher levels when ready. Some advanced Creative courses recommend prior Technical foundations for best results.
